@FediTips Hi, how does one search for other instances when one doesn't know their names/addresses?

A two-post thread from Penguinflight.

1/2 Something to remember about #Mastodon is that the servers we are hosted on - each " #Instance " - is owned by someone or group. This is particularly noticeable with the smaller instances, where it is an individual - often as, or more, anonymous than the members.

The bottom line with these single-ownership instances is that the rules of conduct are ENTIRELY at the whim of the owner. That means open to their interpretation and theirs alone.

2/2 This can lead to some "interesting" decisions by an owner. Ones that may not seem entirely logical; rational.

That's the price of admission.

If one is on someone else's turf, at their cost, then one lives with it or looks elsewhere. However flawed moderation under a single owner may be, their word is law. Even if they are a complete Muppet.

So essentially, whilst Mastodon as a whole is vaguely democratic, these instances are, in no uncertain terms, kingdoms.

Worth remembering.
