The first year of the Welsh 20mph switch are in.

๐ŸŸข100 fewer dead or seriously injured
๐ŸŸข26% fewer injured
๐ŸŸขThe lowest 3 month casualty figure since records began 46 years ago

These aren't just figures on a page. They're real people, real families, real lives saved.

@ScottishGreens to hell with the right wing blowhards to want to force their speed onto our streets.

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 18:55:27

@ScottishGreens as a resident of the Scottish Borders where the default urban speed limit is also 20mph I certainly support extending this to the rest of Scotland. Traffic flows better and it is more pleasant walking along roads.

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 19:11:22

@EricBranse I also live in the Borders, and I have found the 20 mph limits to be a big improvement no matter whether I'm cycling, walking or driving. Definitely keen for it to be rolled out nationwide. @ScottishGreens

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 19:21:21

@krans @EricBranse @ScottishGreens amen. took the family on holiday to the Borders (Peebles & Innerleithen) last year and it was brilliant to see 20mph as standard, especially with having kids charging around.

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 21:17:39

@EricBranse @ScottishGreens instead of going 30 or 40 to the next queue you can do a nice steady 20! Literally no impact on journey time. See this all the time on my bike I always get past them in the end. Only downside: some fragile men don't get to validate themselves by going fast in their brum brums, which is more like an upside.

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 19:41:39

@ScottishGreens
We've got this in Brighton, was doubtful at first but it does seem to improve things, not seen any before/after statistics but it's much nicer walking round

and if you want a selfish driver focused reason it could save you quite a bit on your insurance: msn.com/en-gb/cars/news/insura

@ScottishGreens
We could do with much more enforcement of the 20 and 30mph speed limits in the Highlands, and Scotland generally. In England, there are lots and lots of speed cameras for urban streets. There are hardly any here.

An example: there is a long straight going through Roy Bridge. It is *very* common for vehicles to travel along this straight at 60mph. The limit is 30mph. Only points and fines will change this behaviour.

BTW it should also be 20mph limit, not 30mph.

Föderation EN Fr 31.01.2025 11:22:35

@fitheach @ScottishGreens Looks like the classic village on a main road problem. Just a sign alone doesn't do much when the rest of the road looks like a trunk road. Cameras might help, but ideally roads like that would be changed to feel like you should slow down. Maybe narrow the road and widen the pavement, and put in some bumps

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 21:07:21

@ScottishGreens The Welsh gov shouldnโ€™t have backtracked. Shouldโ€™ve doubled down. Now letโ€™s start handing out permanent driving bans to those doing over 70 in fucking school zones.

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 21:24:40

@ScottishGreens

Which is why and want to get rid of it!

@ScottishGreens In Spain in 2011, due to some macroeconomic issues with the price of petrol, the leftist government reduced the speed limit in motorways from 120 to 110 km/h in order to save fuel.
But apart from the savings, we had a drastic reduction in the number of accidents and road kills.
However, the price of petrol eventually fell and the speed limit was raised again. It seems that saving lives was less important than people driving at full speed ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป

@osqar7 @ScottishGreens

Very interesting, but please source the link between fuel economy and the Spanish decision, the link between lower prices and the gouvernment dexision to put it back faster again, and the drop in mortality in between, or I can't share this good info, and I'f love to share it

@Woland @ScottishGreens Sorry, I don't usually answer to sea-lioning requests.

@osqar7 @ScottishGreens

Thanks for this expression, I didn't know it :)

But check on me ;) I shared the post you've commented, I share your values and I'm for a slow traffic, I'm genuinely interested in your data and I'd just love to have it

I just like to have the sources of informations to be able to share them. It comes from my Humanities university upbringing

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 22:36:36

@Woland @ScottishGreens I don't think it's difficult to find, this happened between March and June 2011, the economic background is well explained in all Spanish newspapers.
As for the accidents reduction, the best source is DGT (General Directorate of Traffic), they have records since a lot of years ago.
If you're looking for sources in English, I reckon this might be challenging.

Föderation EN Do 30.01.2025 22:39:22

@osqar7 @ScottishGreens

Thank you very much! Spanish sources are just fine :)

I'm not looking for a fake debate, I just sincerely think there would be less space for trolls and disinformations if it became the norme to source.

Thanks you again and good evening

If you had the courage to have people walking in front of cars carrying a red flag youโ€™d save a real number of lives. Amateurs!!

Wait, the records only began in 1979?

@ScottishGreens Iโ€™ll bet itโ€™s a lot quieter too. I hate traffic noise.
