Imagine a country in which more than 13.000 scientists come together - to warn an incoming new government of a grave and pertinent danger.

Imagine all they ask is to take it seriously, communicate about it honestly, and base policies on evidence.

And then it gets completely ignored.
By the media, politicians, public discourse.

That's where we're at.

Sooo ... I was an election helper in our national elections this Sunday. It was a fantastic experience, all told - it moved me in unexpected ways, gave food for thought, changed me somehow, just a bit. Here's a report. Maybe it's interesting.

We were a nice little team charged with setting everything up, then once open I served as a keeper of records: checking that voters are in the lists and eligible.

The university I'm a prof with (otherwise I work at a non-uni climate research institute), Humboldt University Berlin - Berlin's oldest university - has *finally* left the hellsite today, alongside 60 other institutions of higher learning.

Unfortunately, they're not (yet!?) turning to mastodon - the one social media option with no algorithm, no ads, no tracking, and distributed federation. They remain on meta.

It's sth how many of my colleagues remain inactive in the fediverse, prefer bsky.

Yippiyadayyy!!

A rare temporary bug my favorite mastodon app @Tusky had developed, where composition windows got lost when changing to another app on android (eg to look something up), is now resolved again!

I have other mastodon apps installed - but always quickly return to Tusky.

And even while the bug was active, the publicly available development version "Tusky Nightly" always provided me with a working alternative solution.

My colleague @rahmstorf, a pioneer and leading expert in the field, has written an excellent explanation - I highly recommend it - on the new study published this evening on the breakdown (tipping) of the Atlantic ocean's circulation.

The findings are in line with previous work but make it much more certain. They're very scary.
