As a visual designer I shouldn't be saying it but @pluralistic just reminded me how much I loved MySpace and how my young adult obsessive creative personality with a passion for punk zines and comics was constantly changing and shuffling stuff in my profile. It was so fun to go on my friends profile and see what they did with theirs and exchange tips.

@alx @pluralistic Was just chatting with a co-worker about HTML this week (she's our in-house copy editor).

"Like anyone 40 years old, I learned it from MySpace."

Win.

@nsmsn @alx @pluralistic I think about half of us, myself included, learned by View Sourcing, but the other half learned from @lemay's book!

Here in Germany, we all learned it from . wiki.selfhtml.org/wiki/SELFHTM

Edit: Should have mentioned @selfhtml as well, since they are here (of course)!

A screenshot of a 2000ish, table-layout based website, similar to very early Wikipedia. Clean, nested boxes design. Headline "SELFHTML", an "organic" looking circular logo and the taglines "Die Energie des Verstehenes" (Energy of understanding), "HTML Dateien selber erstellen" (Create HTML files yourself)

@jef @nsmsn @alx @pluralistic @lemay One of her books was definitely my go-to when first learning html.

It was a great read. However, I can't even describe how painful it was to view MySpace as a trained architect. My urge to organize it could not be satisfied. I could only make my own page cool and sleek.

@mizblueprint @pluralistic I was just starting my architecture journey (which I later abandoned for visual communication), and it’s true, some profiles (probably even mine in at least some of its many iterations) were very messy. But it was so amazing to go around and see how everyone was expressing themselves, in a way that was personal and collective at the same time. And the music: I remember trying to match the style with the song. Basically MySpace was a collection of digital zines

@alx @hypebot @pluralistic I hated MySpace. I was young, into Typography, and could not imagine in my wildest dreams how incredibly boring the web would become.

Föderation EN Sa 20.07.2024 23:15:16

@fleg @hypebot @pluralistic I always thought the worst nightmare for typographers were the illegible metal band logotypes (which I graphically loved though found them frustrating when I went to big festivals and was trying to read the posters to see who was playing were). Now that I think of it, MySpace was full of those bands’ profiles so I guess it makes sense πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Š

@alx @hypebot @pluralistic The opposite, actually (I have written permission to speak for all designers in the fediverse, btw). I love them 🀘 ! They really care about each bloody hook that goes into the logo, and i very much appreciate that.
Metal covers, on the other hand…
