I want to share this publicly, as I feel there are other admins out there that might want to see it and possibly chime in here as well.

@FediTips which is the same person(s) who own/run @FediGarden has admitted to the DM's they have sent.

I've provided some feedback for them, and would love to see other admins do the same possibly.

"has admitted to the DM's they have sent."

What? "admitted"? That's a very odd way of putting it.

I openly said it was a DM from me in the original DMs. I have links to my other accounts on the profile that sent the DM.

Fedi.tips curates a list, and so it’s their decision what the criteria are.

Really simple.

A change of criteria isn’t even anything that they’d need to announce. If they DM’d all the listed servers I think that’s a nice and fair move.

Anyone who no longer wants to be listed gets removed. Really simple, too. I don’t see any problem here at all.

@nellie_m Sure, you're right. It's more of HOW they DM'd us and what was stated and how it was stated. You don't know this because you likely didn't get the same message we all got.

@CliffWade @nellie_m

When I started the site, before I listed anyone, I contacted each instance admin to ask if they wanted to be listed, and then asked if they met the criteria (which included being compliant with the Mastodon Covenant).

When the criteria changed, I DMed the same people again to check if they met the new criteria.

I wasn't DMing people at random.

I'm not sure how else you want this to have been done? I couldn't change the criteria without contacting you.

I had the DM yesterday for a Mastodon instance I host elsewhere. I responded in effect to say that:

* I have not currently defederated from Threads
* I will be asking my users what they want as I am not a dictatorship
* I am not contravening any of their (FediGarden) current terms
* I invited them to feel free to remove my instance from their curated list.

Personally I believe the fediverse should be open -- that is its ethos. Individual users (and servers) are of course entitled to do what they want. However, we can't assume everyone on another service is the devil -- there are nice people all around, and total twats too. It's called life.

It's very challenging -- those of us who run a public service can't (in my view) enforce our own beliefs
too heavily. Don't get me wrong -- if anyone breaks the rules on my instance they get banned. I am quite clear on that. I do not tolerate hate, etc. However not everyone on Threads is a scum bag.

The Fedi* brand does some great work, but there's a strong personal opinion flowing through.

End of the day, we all have choices. Leave/Don't leave. Follow/Don't Follow. Block... etc

Thanks for raising it, Cliff; I was going to do a note on it too but no need now.

Play nice everyone!

"The Fedi* brand does some great work, but there's a strong personal opinion flowing through."

...damn right there is. Meta, Google, Microsoft etc are a corrosive danger to humanity and civil society.

That's the point of accounts like mine, to have a strong personal conviction. That's what motivates me to try to help people onto alternatives.

Tech is not neutral, tech users and providers should not be neutral.
