using an AI-generated image on a blog post is a political statement against moral rights of artists and in favor of alienation of labor

@dmarti good poll

@evan thank you, sometimes (to me anyway) it seems like the choice to use an AI image sends a stronger message than the blog text

Föderation EN Sa 15.06.2024 17:21:55

@dmarti @evan Just the other day I instinctively closed an article that had what seemed like an AI-generated featured image.

Not sure yet if I'll develop a habit.

@stefan @dmarti @evan IDK. I loathe Stable and OpenAI like the next guy, but folks like fast.ai do some really impressive stuff with image generation that doesn't infringe on copyright and doesn't need the energy equivalent of New Zealand.

@vonxylofon @dmarti @evan Fair enough!

I am personally not opposed to the technology as long as it can be implemented thoughtfully and without exploitation. Good to know there are people trying to achieve that!

@dmarti Blogs about AI image generation are allowed to use AI images. The rest had better be able to justify any such usage.

@dmarti
Very "death of the author" of you. I think it would almost never be an _intentional_ statement.

Föderation EN Sa 15.06.2024 19:44:15

@dmarti all ai is evil, is that the claim?
Sounds like a fallacy to me; if you're not with us, you're against us..

There should be disclosed when/rever ai is used, that'd be the right thing to do imo.. And the lack of that disclosure is a problem to me, not the usage of ai. I consider that a choice, though not a favourable one.

Föderation EN Sa 15.06.2024 22:10:45

@dmarti just on sheer consumption of resources alone using ai is an evil act

Föderation EN So 16.06.2024 02:29:04

@dmarti I'd say it depends how the ai was trained. If all data owners and artists were paid or compensated differently but satisfactory for them, sure why not. The current state of reality is that generative ai is trained on stolen data and stolen work, so using it is always wrong, imo.
