So an interesting change is coming to Mastodon embeds.

Previously, the embed code consisted of an iframe, going forward, this is being switched to a blockquote.

In either case, the original text of the post is not included and is rather added after the main page the embed is on is loaded.

I don't really think much about those reading time indicators, I certainly don't use them on my own websites, but @baldur makes some good points.

"To be meaningful, a reading time estimation algorithm needs to take a number of these variables into account. The bare minimum would combine text complexity [...] and vocabulary, with length and the median level of schooling of the assumed audience to get a rough estimate."

There are some really nice updates coming in the next version of Mastodon, including grouped notifications and profile hover cards.

It's really tempting to try out the beta version, but the upgrade steps do look a bit scary. Really hope updating Mastodon will one day be as easy as updating a WordPress blog.
