@feditips

What happens to the reach if you "reply" to a post but delete the '@' recipients?

I would expect it to be visible to my followers with a grey reply symbol and "replied to NAME" at the top just like when I reply to one of my own posts to add to it.

Is that what really happens though? Or is it still only visible in the thread without a boost.

The visibility of the reply would depend on which visibility setting you choose for it. Public and Unlisted are visible to everyone, followers-only to followers, mentions-only to accounts mentioned in the reply.

If you remove all accounts from the reply, no one will be notified about it being posted, not even the person who started the thread (though they may be able to see it when browsing the thread, if you've chosen a visibility that they can see).

@feditips so a public post and a public reply where the recipients are deleted is essentially only visible in the thread unless you boost it?

It's visible to everyone, but it won't cause any notifications to appear anywhere. So, people are only likely to notice it if they're browsing the thread.

@feditips right. I understand the lack of notifications. I'm just wondering if my followers or the local timeline would potentially see it or if I need to hit the boost button for that.

The local timeline would see it if it's a public post, but not if it's any other visibility setting.
