Never thought I'd agree with someone from GS

> AI technology is exceptionally expensive, and to justify those costs, the technology must be able to solve complex problems, which it isn't designed to do," [...] The starting point for costs is also so high that even if costs decline, they would have to do so dramatically to make automating tasks with AI affordable [...] In our experience, even basic summarization tasks often yield illegible and nonsensical results.

@gabrielesvelto my employer is owned by GS now (well, sorta - majority shareholders for investment return reasons) and you have no idea how glad I am to see this, because I was fully expecting them to go all in on this shit and leave me needing to find work elsewhere.

@gsuberland glad to hear that. It's been funny seeing all this VC money being poured into something that still doesn't have a business case after years of development, while there are lots of valid investment opportunities with guaranteed ROI. Renewables come to mind, we put a bit of the family savings in them and we're seeing >8% yearly returns. If we had significant funds it'd be like printing money and I can't believe large fund managers haven't noticed.

WTF? 😂

@gabrielesvelto Well, the article has both GS AI cheerleaders and sceptics. But one of the cheerleaders is using Uber as an example of recent innovation we wouldn't want to be without - Uber has never ever been a profitable company!

Föderation EN Mo 01.07.2024 14:53:35

@drgroftehauge indeed! An Uber cheerleader is most likely someone who has a stake in the company and desperately needs others to pour more money in their pit so that they don't go belly up, which aligns very well with AI cheerleading too. From a bird's eye view these are Ponzi schemes.

@gabrielesvelto

this may well be true
on the other hand, why on earth do people on mastodon, a generally liberal place, trust GS, the epitome of wall street evil, the "vampire squid" ??

Föderation EN Mo 01.07.2024 15:40:00

@failedLyndonLaRouchite because their job is to invest money so they get even more, and they noticed that AI is a money pit, not something you'll ever get returns from. So in this case they can be trusted because it's their money they're talking about, and they're extremely attached to it.

@gabrielesvelto

The word "May" is doing an awful lot of heavy lifting in that title. ;-)
