Trying to imagine being a few months pregnant and being told I have to go to a conference in a state where they have let women die if they have a complication that may become fatal.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 19:42:00

FFS, please stop holding your conferences in places legitimately unsafe for a percentage of your members.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 19:48:18

@hacks4pancakes Until this madness ends, everyone should just agree to host conferences at Fort JB Pritzker. It's centrally located, and it's basically the only place that won't look like the Fallout Wasteland that *is* centrally located. Also then my zero budget butt can go to some of these.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 19:49:32

@ocdtrekkie I always endorse my home state but even Vegas is better.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 19:52:09

@hacks4pancakes The only thing worse than the cold is the heat. It's a dry heat but a dry 120 F is still 120 F.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 19:51:06

@hacks4pancakes We'd love to have you in Denver for WWHF.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 19:56:07

@samofhearts alas I’m fleeing the country. Until WWHF down under 😅🙃

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 19:59:32

@hacks4pancakes Would love to see Gen Con move to someplace better, but its size and needs mean there's not really a viable alternative. Any blue states out there wanna build a mega convention space with walkable hotels for 80K attendees? I can keep wishing...

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:16:34

@rickhunter @hacks4pancakes

Maryland, Colorado, New York, Nevada, California, Washington and Oregon all still exist...

Not moving Gen Con is a *choice* and with the regular controversies in tabletop gaming, I'm not surprised.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:25:55

@j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes Gen Con needs at least 1 million sqft of walkable event space, with that predicted to grow again before their current contract is up. Vegas and Chicago are really the only places left in the US, but neither has hotel space that is adjacent and/or connected to support the attendees (gamers with large gear, mobility issues, cosplay). I'm sure Gen Con itself would love to hold it in Washington instead. Everyone seems to want it to move, but I'm not sure how without breaking it into smaller cons. (This debate comes up about every two weeks on social media. Nobody has the answer.)

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:27:31

@rickhunter @j4yc33 Its so surreal knowing I will never go to another gen con -_-

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:33:38

@hacks4pancakes @j4yc33 Really hoping we can find a way for it to be "for a long time" rather than "never". And I finally got to go to your seminar last year 😢

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:31:05

@rickhunter @hacks4pancakes

So, the Gaylord National Harbor and MGM Hotel would probably be a good sized "Make Do" situation, but the Baltimore Convention center is *bigger* than the Indiana Convention Center and is walkable to more hotel rooms.

Edit: Colorado Convention Center is also bigger.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:36:46

@j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes Awesome! Maybe Gen Con will consider those when their current renewal ends in 2030.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:08:17

@neoluddite @j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes Events of this size make long-term plans. Since Gen Con uses the same stadium as the Indianapolis Colts, they have to reserve far in advance so the NFL can't take priority. (Though it was often hilarious when there were football games during Gen Con. Who are all those people cosplaying as football fans?)

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:09:00

@rickhunter @j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes just rename it Vichy Con then

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:13:02

@j4yc33 @rickhunter @hacks4pancakes I mean, it sounds like they're about to have a sudden reduction in attendance, so the con is fucked either way. Might as well go down swinging for some sort of principle.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:14:06

@neoluddite @rickhunter @hacks4pancakes I know there were/are discussions in the Battletech community that went pretty deep on it.

Like, Indiana isn't 50/50, that'd be Texas, but it might be 49.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:18:00

@j4yc33 @neoluddite @hacks4pancakes There wasn't a big dropoff last year when the abortion ban was put in place, and I don't expect a whole lot more in terms of new laws in this year. But that's because I think Braun will hold back expecting changes to roll out at the federal level, in which case we're fucked no matter where we go.

Indianapolis itself is pretty liberal, but the supermajority in the state has a lot of power to keep Indy from doing much on its own.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:27:56

@rickhunter @j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes Ah yes, option 3 is that you find out that your fandom is full of cunts

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:33:08

@rickhunter @j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes San Diego? (2.6M sq ft and already handles comicon)

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:39:09

@Rycaut @j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes It would certainly be nicer weather!

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:35:04

@rickhunter @j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes Plus California and a town already used to an event that has as much (or more) cosplay etc. Personally I'd love it as getting to Indy from California takes a day and isn't fun (often needing to change planes), San Diego is a short, cheap, quick flight)

But the bigger issue with San Diego is that a lot of people drive to GenCon (bringing games/taking home purchases) so a coastal location is challenging.

Detroit might be worth looking at for that reason.

Föderation EN Do 16.01.2025 06:00:52

@rickhunter @j4yc33 @hacks4pancakes
There is no place in the US with more hotel capability than Las Vegas. It regularly hosts significantly larger conferences than Gen Con. The idea that only Indianapolis, which is at best a third-tier convention city, can host the event is frankly ludicrous.

Föderation EN Do 16.01.2025 02:26:06

@rickhunter @hacks4pancakes Illinois...

I can't imagine the Rosemont convention center is that much more expensive, and if it is there's probably some cheap ass convention center somewhere in this state.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:09:06

@hacks4pancakes It seems like the few places left are also the most expensive.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:18:27

@Kye @hacks4pancakes This is most of the problem. Your options are to hold your event in a draconian shithole for a price you can actually afford, or not hold it at all because holding an event in Chicago/NYC/Seattle/SF/Denver is prohibitively expensive. An org I'm affiliated with holds an event in Houston for exactly this reason: the next most affordable city with enough space for the scale of event in question has quoted prices 3x and beyond the current prices, and that's before attendees have spent a single dollar. That's just venue and organization fees.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:59:23

@klardotsh @Kye @hacks4pancakes Those aren't your only options. There are plenty of cities in safer states that aren't as expensive. For example, if you look at Pennsylvania, just two states over, you have convention centers in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia which could all accommodate a convention the size of GenCon.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 21:25:56

@TamsynUlthara @klardotsh @hacks4pancakes Just having a venue isn't enough. That venue has to have open time on its schedule that works for the event, and those deals are made a long time in advance. Often before these laws existed

Cancelling and moving means penalties come into it, and those can end the event for good.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 21:30:17

@Kye @klardotsh @hacks4pancakes It would be a show of good faith for conventions in that situation to at least *start* looking into moving for future years when they're able. The situation is pretty dire.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:13:29

@hacks4pancakes We can assure you, there is no patch of earth that
a) is reachable by all, despite being citizens of countries with 'bad passports'
b) is safe for all, including trans people

If you wonder why your 'global conf' on FuzzyCalc looks very white, ask if the Nigerian engineer can get to it!

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 20:42:34

@hacks4pancakes

I was invited to a conference in Florida. Big nope!

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 21:00:52

@hacks4pancakes This is actually something that GamesDoneQuick (a game speed running charity event) *did*. When Florida started with mask bans and anti-trans legislation, they cancelled their multi-year hotel deal and moved their event to a different state. It was very expensive but very worth it.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 21:01:06

@hacks4pancakes It affects so many industries and aspects of tech 🙁
I admit I've made the decision to just not go and live with the fall out.
Given that none of those events has any meaningful health policies either, I'm just concluding that they're not a community that wants me.

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 21:35:17

@hacks4pancakes Agreed. I've been annoyed to see a couple of my prof orgs continue to hold conferences in unsafe parts of the US, while also being happy to see at least one other change its policies to hold conferences only in places that are safe for queer and transgender people

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 22:42:07

@hacks4pancakes even I’m afraid to go to the loo in the US and I’m just a cis woman who has a short haircut and broad shoulders 🤦‍♀️

Föderation EN Mi 15.01.2025 23:12:08

@hacks4pancakes but the hotel rates are so much cheaper there...
