Encouraging non-technical people and organisations to set up their own online services instead of relying on massive corporations.

All the recommended services are free and open source, and available through managed hosting providers. You can find out more on my website at growyourown.services

🚫 Completely opposed to cryptocurrency, "web3", NFTs, blockchain, tokens, defi, daos etc. They are scams.

The more technical self-hosters out there may be interested in this blog post about how @stefano created a global Fediverse weather service using a €4 VPS:

I’ve been running some caching experiments and wouldn’t mind some feedback for .
The (kind of notorious) β€œremote content cache" setting had one use case that seemed useful: Clearing out a massive amount of database content after making the common newbie mistake of connecting relays to a new solo instance. I spun up an instance and watched the database and media explode in size compared to a normal solo-instance following a few accounts.

Do you use a custom domain name for your email address?

Have you noticed any additional difficulties with using newer top level domains compared to the old traditional ones? Or has it made no difference whether you use newer or older TLDs?

(Newer TLDs would be things like .social or .pizza or .world, older TLDs would be .com or .org or .net)

Asking as there seem to be conflicting reports about how much email is affected by the choice of TLD?

The video I just boosted (video.fedihost.co/videos/watch) does a really good job of summing up the pros and cons of managed hosting vs VPSes.

Managed hosting doesn't get as much limelight as VPSes, which is a shame as managed hosting opens up this whole area to non-technical people.

Sometimes people assume that everyone can use a VPS, but for a lot of people it isn't really sustainable as it requires a commitment to fiddling with the techy stuff behind the scenes when it goes wrong.

Anyone got any UK/EU Ghost CMS hosting recommendations?

Don't want to be sticking stuff in the US.

To be clear: i have hosting for other services, just interested in companies that specifically cater to Ghost setups

Hey Mastodon admins, do you want to allow your users to invite people to join your server? The setting for switching this on is now here:

Preferences > Administration > Roles > Default Permissions, tick the box marked "Invite Users", click "Save Changes"

(I had to look this up on the Github as it was so buried πŸ˜… )

If you're wanting to quietly advertise your Mastodon server for people to join but you don't want to open it completely, you can keep your sign-ups closed but still have invitations active.

You can generate invitations for people to join your server by going to βš™οΈ Preferences > Invite People, then choose your settings and let people know the link. (If you change your mind later you can deactivate the link.)

Myself and my good friend @bumble (who runs a variety of server types on the fediverse), are joining forces to offer #hosting for #GoToSocial servers.

It's early days but we'd be keen to hear from anyone who wants to try running their own GoToSocial but doesn't have the skill, want, or equipment to run their own server.

The aim is to simply charge for running costs for the server. We will not take any costs from this (unless we end up with hundreds of them!). We anticipate a basic instance for one user (or a small handful) will be 5 euros per month and the charge is month to month. You pay each month in advance, and can cancel any time.

All you need is a domain name (or a sub-domain of your existing domain). We can help with this, or help you buy one for a few dollars/euros. We will handle all admin of the server.

Initially we are only looking for a few people to participate. If you are interested send me a direct message.

If your provider has done something unacceptable, you might consider switching to another one, but this might mean telling all your contacts to update your address.

You can avoid this problem by creating your own domain name and using it with your favourite email provider. If they ever do something bad, you will be able to switch to another provider without having to change your email address.

There's a beginner's guide to making your own domain name here:
