@jcrabapple I see this shows up for you too, what is this and why is it not in English?

@NeadReport Where are you seeing that? The band is French so some of their YouTube descriptions are in English and French, but that certainly doesn't look French.

@jcrabapple It's shows up in your toot. I've had it show up too. I usually switch to finding the tune on YouTube because I don't want people to think it's some kind of compromised link. It's basically annoying (for me).

@NeadReport @jcrabapple link previews/cards are generated from your instance server (back-end), not the client.

@Vivaldi Can you have a look through this thread, please? Trying to determine why the YouTube music 'consent' link is showing up in non-English and possibly only in the social.vivaldi instance. Thanks.

@jcrabapple Very sorry to have hijacked your toot! I didn't think it would spin off like this - might be getting close to an answer though.

This looks like a link to Youtube's GDPR consent page.
My guess: The preview probably look that way to Vivaldi Social users due to the following sequence:
* Vivaldi Social is hosted on Iceland (a European country)
* The instance will request a preview from Youtube for the link in the post (each separate Mastodon instance requests its own copy of a preview, they are not copied from the original instance).
* The Youtube server will see that the request comes from Europe, and
* does not seem to have previously accepted the GDPR notice, and
* therefore redirects the preview request to the GDPR consent page, and
* since the request comes from and Icelandic IP address ..
* returns the link and title to the Icelandic language version of the GDPR consent page.
This is a particularly difficult problem to solve, because servers have to be located somewhere, and if the website uses the geographical location that requests come from to make decisions about what language to return the resulting page in, it will always end up in the wrong language for someone when generating previews

@TechieNotNetie @jcrabapple Yeah, this is making more sense now. For what it's worth (to me!) I opened a ticket with Vivaldi's bug tracking to see what they will say. Thanks for weighing in with the explainer!
