[Experience with Matrix?]

Who has personal experience with Matrix and the use of a so-called "bridge" to connect to WhatsApp and Signal?

How long have you been using this solution and why or perhaps no longer? πŸ€”

Thank you for your participation and possibly sharing the post. πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘

@marco @kranzkrone I want to know this too, especially for WhatsApp and Telegram.

@kranzkrone Matrix works best when talking natively to Matrix, as talking to other platforms like WA or Signal requires re-encrypting data in the bridge. Beeper solves this by running the bridge in the client; other services run them serverside. In practice, both WA & Signal bridges can run stably and are maintained, and many people use them for convenience, but it's never going to be as good as native Matrix, and not all features (e.g. VoIP calling) work over the bridge.

Thanks for your Reply, especially from the main source. πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘

VoIP is something I don't care about, at least in mainstream messenger. 😁

In the long run, I wanna go for a dedicated App for Voice/Video -Calls only, but it's not at the top of my priority list. πŸ˜‰

@kranzkrone Hey, just thought I'd share that I've been running WhatsApp and Signal "Mautrix" bridges in Docker for about 6 months now. I do it so that I can easily see all my chats on my work PC and home PC. Also I run WA on a separate old phone so that Meta can't see what apps are on my main phone, and whatever other information they like to collect 😀
The bridges generally work really well. Now and then one might stop working fully, but a docker pull and restart has always fixed that.

Sounds good to me, the Description about your journey with Matrix so far. πŸ˜ƒ

Is having an old Phone with WhatsApp installed mandatory in order for the bridge to work? πŸ€”

@kranzkrone It's been a fun adventure. My long term goal is to move as many friends directly onto Matrix or Signal, but for now I have to cope with WhatsApp πŸ˜…

You can keep WhatsApp on your main phone. I only use a different phone for enhanced privacy, but when I first set the bridge up, WhatsApp was on my main phone and it worked fine.

You might prefer to keep WA on your phone, as they don't allow you to voice or video call on anything except their official mobile app.

*The* main reason for using Matrix for me, apart from with the very few contacts I have already using it, is to have connectivity to as many other networks as possible that REQUIRE a recent smartphone to create or update an account -- Signal in particular.

If I can be contacted via a bridge, then many of those I know who /dont have sms or voice lines and dont email/ can find me and communicate again. If I can initiate text and still-image exchanges to those whose contact details I have, via that bridge, that would be even better. But I absolutely dont want to have to have active accounts on any of those platforms to use the bridge.... or even a recent smartphone at the moment!
