One thing I really like about the fediverse is its high proportion of craftspeople. Woodcarvers, potters, knitters, paper crafts. Just loads and loads of people making stuff and showing the world on here.

Threads doesn't live on an open, accessible protocol. Its actual protocol is Instagram, which is proprietary. That's why, eleven months after Meta started testing federation—and eight months after it started letting fediverse users follow Threads accounts—you still can't follow a Mastodon account directly from Threads.

@RnDanger @tchambers Full crash. Processes grounded to a halt. Even window swapping froze up. Everything went back to normal after Firefox terminated. Trying to reopen the window crashed it again.

A few non-Mastodon services have noticed their servers aren't fetching from Threads. Could be intentional blocks, could be temporary compatibility issues. But they're so eager to federate with Threads that they've decided to route around authorized fetch. Which could also be used to route around authorized fetch on Mastodon servers.

Basically, eroding fediverse safety and privacy standards to force compatibility with #Threads.

I'm curious about how much we trust other platforms. (Boost if you're curious, too.)
