Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:25:17 Do you ever think about the idea of very slow time machines. Like a conveyance that can move at a speed of two years per year or somesuch |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:26:05 @mcc I mean, if you think about it, we're already- *Is hooked off the stage.* |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:26:49 @nazokiyoubinbou Faster than that |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:48:10 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou OK, but please consider for a second. If the intent of time travel is to have the experience of two years in what subjectively feels like one year, could that be fixed by slowing down your mental processes? Just think slower, experience slower, and two days go by in the time that feels like one. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:50:34 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou you could, for example, only sleep once every two nights, but for 16 hours. You could take 12 hours between meals instead of 6. Slow your walking pace, take longer reading the pages of a book. Soon, the world would seem to be speeding by while you are running at normal subjective speed. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:51:22 @evan @nazokiyoubinbou i tried this once with just getting really depressed |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:14:58 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou I mean, most of us have it all the time. Weeks go by and feel like days; what we think was an hour is only 5 minutes. We arrive in the nick of time for trains for which we were 20 minutes late. Clock time and mind time drift a lot. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:53:25 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou subjective experience of time is so tricksy, I think it would be quite possible to modify the experience of time passing. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:58:04 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou when we talk about time going forward or backwards, or at different speeds, you have to ask, relative to WHAT? and the only real answer is our own subjective experience. If the entire universe went forward in time twice as fast as "normal", there would be no way to tell. Nobody would know. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:58:27 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou tl;dr "time travel" is just the word we use for the universe changing out of sync with our own personal experience of time. Of those two things, it's much easier to change our subjective experience than to change the entire fucking universe. So, "time travel" is best effected by changing how you experience time. |
Föderation · So 09.02.2025 19:59:42 @evan Nah. I expect the universe to change for me. @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:04:59 @adiz @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou it's a perspective shift, whether you are changing who you are, or changing the universe. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:03:31 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou I think you could do this with time travel into the past, too. Or, at least, time travel from the future to the present. If the person you will be in 2040 were to travel back to 2025, and were to inhabit your body, what would they think and feel? Let those thoughts and feelings take you over, and guide your actions. (You need to remember to do this on the other side, in 2040, but only for a moment.) |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:05:13 @evan @nazokiyoubinbou This would be absurdly useful for me but since I didn't think ahead of time to do this in 1997 or 2011 it is less helpful |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:37:22 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou it's never too late to time travel from the future to your present self. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:39:19 @mcc @nazokiyoubinbou also, are you sure you won't have traveled back from 2026 to 1997? Memory is a tricky thing. Maybe you did, and just forgot. Or maybe you were just zoned out and didn't notice it. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:41:05 Been there, done that... |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 20:05:14 |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:28:14 @mcc every time I buy an avocado |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:28:30 @mcc I wonder at what distance from the sun you would have to go around it to achieve both 1g centrifugal force and a two years per year time-speed. |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:29:53 @mcc what, like in Primer? |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:30:56 @nev I think I'm imagining like a generation ship that works on Primer rules |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:40:12 the joys of time travel and cryonic suspension for long trips? |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:44:14 @mcc Well, there is time dilation, so people could age only n/2 years in n years by going really fast (if there were some way of preventing the acceleration from killing them). |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:44:34 @mcc your young self meets your 100 year old self who was actually only 35 when they went into the time machine to go back in time |
Föderation EN So 09.02.2025 19:44:45 @mcc I was just thinking this morning about a time machine attached to an alarm clock, where you hit snooze and instead of you and the whole world advancing by 10 minutes before the alarm goes off again, you advance by 10 minutes relative to the world - you get 10 minutes to sleep without time advancing around you so the alarm never appears to pause. |
