People now trust 'information' coming from black box algorithms controlled by just a few companies, as though they have "looked it up" somewhere,

but also we can copy/paste relevant code snippets, with some amount of success! so it's great, actually! ✨

this industry is fucking stressful

I have seen people go "that's wrong" to one response, and still take the next response at face value if it seems plausible.

None of them would say they "trust" it to be correct. But see, they caught the mistake! So it's just a tool or whatever. As long as it gives an answer you're happy with.

@mia I ask people if they "verify" AI answers. Most say "yes". I ask them how they verify. After some squirming, they say they check to see if it looks "reasonable". I doubt they actively do so often, but even if true, it's output built to look reasonable! Looking reasonable but being wrong is the failure point you are supposed to avoid through verification. I explain, they agree, but continue undaunted.

It's frustrating to see so much effort expended to avoid using any critical thinking.

@swiftone @mia Too true, but stupidity weeds its self out, if you know what I mean.

@Asenzi That is a bit glib when we're talking about the bulk of our society, don't you think? Leaded gasoline was developed despite the dangers being known.

Things dont magically get better over time, that only happens because people try to make things better.

@swiftone @mia Afraid "thinking" is much replaced by "thinging" nowadays. Sad, but true…
