I've had the new Mastodon notification UI on a botsin.space account for awhile now, and I still have no idea how to tell which notifications in the list are new and which ones are old.

I like the notification grouping conceptually, but in practice this UI seems much harder to read and make sense of. Aside from notification grouping, a lot of elements seem like a straight downgrade from the previous UI. I hope it's able to get some usability work going forward.

@misty I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. It also seems to only display the first paragraph of a post, without indicating it's truncated.

One step forward, four steps back.

@foo I haven't experienced that myself (my botsin.space posts are always exactly one sentence), but I saw there's an open issue for it. It does something to show if the first line of a post is abbreviated, but nothing to show if any content after that is omitted. github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

@misty Yeah, here's what it looks like. That post has a second paragraph with the punchline ('The Youth: "What's CD-R?"')

@misty @foo This has been fixed in github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p and will be in 4.3.0

@renchap @foo Thank you!

I also still don't understand the decision to remove image previews from notifications. The grouping makes notifications smaller now - surely that means *more* vertical space for images, rather than more pressure to *remove* context of what someone is reacting to?

I think it's worth comparing to Bluesky, tumblr, and twitter, all of which have grouped notifications but which also include a smaller copy of an image and additional post context in the notification UI.

For example, here's the notification UI for a very similar post on Bluesky (left) and Mastodon (right). These are almost the same height as each other... yet one is able to make room for the image, and one isn't.

Now that I look at it, the Mastodon version has made room for a line showing the name of the account that made the post - which seems redundant, since this is only showing interactions *on your own post*. Removing that information provides vertical space for a small copy of the image, like Bluesky does.

As an aside, I've only used the new UI on botsin.space, but does it seem *slower* to anyone else? On that instance, at least, it can take multiple seconds to load the notifications UI - it was effectively instance in Mastodon 4.2.

Föderation EN Mi 16.10.2024 20:41:59

@misty i mean i dont notice a difference here, but its slow on botsin.space bc botsin.space is very slow

Föderation EN Mi 16.10.2024 20:42:21

@pup_hime Yeah that's fair. I guess this is more of a thing where an already-slow instance performs even worse with the new UI

Föderation EN Mi 16.10.2024 20:44:05

@misty this might be a "works on my machine" thing and ALSO the fact my account at blorbo.social (also on 4.3.x) is relatively new, but the new notifs UI works at the expected speed there than on botsin.space

but botsin also just took like 45 seconds to load the actual homepage for me (before timeline content, which is just me anyway) versus blorbo

Föderation EN Mi 16.10.2024 20:45:47

@jahtnamas Yeah that's fair. So this is probably just a thing where an already-slow server is performing worse on the new UI, but a faster server is fine on either

Föderation EN Mi 16.10.2024 20:50:02

@misty The new grouped notifications endpoint may be slower, because it needs to serialise more data than before. But the P90 on mastodon.social is 600ms, so it's not *too* slow.
We know we need to improve this, but it related to JSON serialisation performance and we havent found a good way of improving it without a lot of work.

Föderation EN Mi 16.10.2024 20:51:40

@misty I will bring this again to our designer, I think the reason was about needing to implement sensitive images, multiple image counts and so on, while keeping things in a tight space. Claire tried to add the alt-text, but this is quite information-heavy github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p

Föderation EN Mi 16.10.2024 20:53:34

@renchap Thanks! I appreciate there are some design considerations here, but I'd appreciate any improvements we could get. This is such a downgrade to my workflow that I'm considering no longer using the Mastodon web UI for notifications at all, and switching to some form of third party client. I can't really make sense of my notifications anymore.

Alt text is a good option for some workflows, but IMO for image-focused accounts it still has the issue of not being readable at a glance.
