π¬ You've got mail! Germany's national postal service (Deutsche Post/DHL) has switched to OpenStreetMap for their public facing websites, https://deutschepost.de, https://dhl.de. ππ₯³ππ

@openstreetmap propably because #GoogleMaps sucks and is expensive and can't comply with #GDPR & #BDSG as well as being outdated af.
Seriously, this made the rounds when @NDR showcased it:

@openstreetmap not everywhere though. The app still sends you for navigation to google maps only, even if you don't have it installed. They do not use the phones navigation api at all.

@openstreetmap you do realize that those guys are our enemy no. 1 in germany?
They have licensing agreements with all german states prohibiting them from providing opendata to OSM

@md @openstreetmap How come?
Föderation EN Do 18.04.2024 23:09:41
@ibigfoot they are licensing an excel sheet with post codes to all 16 states which has a proprietary license.Those post codes get mixed into almost all german geodata datasets rendering them proprietary, too.
I got a 100.000β¬ lawsuit ongoing with this shit.

@md @openstreetmap how are post codes something managed by private company? What kind of capitalist hellhole Germany became?

@md @openstreetmap
I am totally pro your activism but that is a grossly misleading statement.
The states licensed proprietary data from them and mixed it with state data. Licensing 101 says that the result is obviously "tainted" by the proprietary data. And thus it cannot be released as open data as long as DP does not agree.
The states could easily provide the original data without the additional proprietary data as open data.
Yes, it would be nice if DP would opendata the post code areas.

@md There is an ongoing legal case that wants to free government geo data.
When the government is forced to give access without fees we might be able to come to a better agreement a out cooperation. Until then we need Ed to keep both separated to avoid tainting.
