@leeloo Good question. speed and comfort. Geared systems are more complex and hence more prone to failure. One big wheel will go further and faster per revolution, while keeping the engineering simple. The big wheel also clears bumps more easily (especially important in a time before pneumatic tyres). The small back wheel is weight saving.
