Recommendations for accessible fediverse software?
I'm working on a blog post for people thinking of joining the fediverse and want to include this information!
Here's what I think I know so far (although might be wrong) ... other suggestions welcome
Mastodon's web UI is pretty good from accessibility perspective, but has some issues.
Pinafore used to be the most accessible web UI but isn't maintained anymore. Semaphpore is a fork doesn't seem to have had any updates in the last year, so I'm not sure of its status. Enafore is another fork but it's described as "somewhat unstable".
I haven't seen anything about what Mastodon mobile apps are better or worse from an accessibility perspective.
For Lemmy, OurBlind says that moderators have and continue to work with the developers to improve accessibility; Thunder, a Lemmy app for iOS and Android, performs well; and Mlem developers are implementing native accessibiity.

@thenexusofprivacy For the iOS side of things, I can recommend FediText and Mona.
Föderation EN Fr 15.11.2024 21:08:19
@kc thanks very much, I'll include that!

I echo FediText and Mona on iOS, but for accessible software on Windows I'd recommend TW Blue, which also has GoToSocial support. Tweesecake is popular on the desktop too. To replace Penaphore, use Semaphore and Enafore. @thenexusofprivacy

@WeirdWriter thank much!
And on a related topic, if I remember correctly, you used to have a Mastodon guide that focused on accessibility. Any suggestions on what I should link to on that front? @FediTips has a few screen-reader links here but alas Changeling's guide doesn't seem to be available any more.

Yep! Find that guide here but also see below for my key links.

@WeirdWriter thanks again! I'm really on the fence about recommending trunk, a fair number of the accounts there don't exist any more so it's not a great first impression for people. But, maybe I'll just set expectations and include the link.

@thenexusofprivacy @WeirdWriter
Oh darn, that's a shame about the Changeling guide! Thanks for the headsup about it, have updated the site.
And of course Robert's guide is listed there.

@The Nexus of Privacy It'd generally be interesting to see which Web interfaces of/for which server applications are how accessible. Experience almost entirely only exists for the default Mastodon Web UI. I think I've also read something about Misskey and Sharkey.
Information about accessibility for not-logged-in visitors would be a good start.

@thenexusofprivacy Try https://elk.zone/home for a good web UI for Mastodon

@stevo887 Thanks. I like Elk but haven't seen anything about its accessibility, have you had good experiences?
Föderation EN Fr 15.11.2024 22:35:19
@thenexusofprivacy to be honest I’ve used Mastodon much more on mobile but what time I have spent on desktop/web with it I like Elk much more than the Mastodon UI

@thenexusofprivacy Pachli (Android client) seems to take accessibility seriously, see: https://mastodon.social/@accessibleandroid/111862516899019220

@jandi @thenexusofprivacy It's just a forked Tusky with some changes that make things difficult, and fixes none of the issues Tusky has while feeling unstable and clunky. I have reverted to Tusky every time I have tried it.

@dhamlinmusic @thenexusofprivacy
Thanks for the info.
Still, I see various accessibility issues are discussed, some resolved, and others added to the roadmap, along with plans for accessibility reviews etc, so I still think it's an option to consider.
Have you reported any of the issues you noticed? Perhaps some of them can be addressed

@thenexusofprivacy I am totally blind and use both NVDA and Talkback. I am not a Mastodon user, but I am on Friendica, which is compatible. Tweesecake is 100% accessible and was designed for the blind. It is a Windows program. Pachli and Tusky for Android are also accessible. I believe Pachli is based on Tusky, but with a focus on accessibility. I may be wrong on the second part. As someone who uses my phone with an external keyboard, I do find it annoying that I must use the touchscreen in Pachli to edit posts, and that it takes several steps to do it. Plus, there is no easy keyboard shortcut to go from the top to the bottom of a list, so that, if I am viewing old posts, I have to go through all of them to reach the top. Enafore is related to Semaphore. I believe it's the version that is now being updated. However, while I have heard it claimed that it is accessible, I have no idea how to edit my posts (a feature it has which Semaphore doesn't). Furthermore, When I hit "reply", a dialogue opens, but there is no edit box, and half of the time, when I go to the site, I don't see the edit box in which I'm supposed to write my post.
As it stands now, my suggestion would be to use Tweesecake for Windows (100% accessible, but only for 64-bit versions), and Pachli for Android (with the knowledge that it can be frustrating to use with a keyboard). Semaphore is good as a web-based client, but without the ability to edit posts. The two things I would like to see in a new client are 32-bit support for Windows (including older versions), and a feature that I can't seem to find anywhere. Namely, the ability to view posts with their comments, instead of having them scattered everywhere. If I see five separate posts, I want to click on them individually to read their respective comments, not see twenty comments from all five posts all over the place.

@thenexusofprivacy Regarding mobile apps, @MonaApp is by far the most accessible mastodon app for iOS, at least from the point of view of a blind user using #VoiceOver. Ice Cubes is also pretty good as a free alternative, I haven't used it in a while because of Mona but assuming it's still going.

@thenexusofprivacy Tusky on Android and Mona for iOS are among the best in terms of #a11y
PS: Semaphore is great as a PWA
