Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 00:54:37 Japan, national morning news show: An uninterrupted 10 minute segment about a new train running on a line to a popular vacation spot. A journalist spends most of the segment being absolutely DELIGHTED by every single feature of this tastefully designed train. She sits in every class of car, tries every seat feature, eats a curry in the dining car, enjoys the view out of panorama windows. Arrives rested and gives us a whirlwind tour of town. This is how you change car culture. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 01:26:44 @tsturm Which one? (Guessing Saphir Odoriko based on the curry) |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 01:58:55 @simonbp I was distracted during the show and honestly didn’t keep track of that. 😅 |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 02:00:18 @tsturm instead in the U.S. we get reporters trying their best to show hype for a shitty tunnel without appropriate safety measures carrying Teslas |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 04:13:38 @tsturm I am a big fan of Asaichi for this reason! |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 06:24:49 @DrEvanGowan Yes! This was a perfect example of how easy it can be to promote train travel. Just do it, and show how nice it is… |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 11:29:44 @tsturm I went to the Toronto area last month and was very frustrated that I could not get around in something like a Shinkansen. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 04:39:05 @tsturm The U.S. could do with a satirical send-up of car travel, applying the same gushing treatment to entering a vehicle hot enough for the steering wheel to raise blisters ("a/c will soon make the cabin survivable!"), being pestered about an oil change by the onboard nanny-bot while sitting in traffic jam ("Yes thank you. Yes thank you! YES THANK YOU!"), arriving for lunch after restaurant has closed ("But such a wide selection of music for the trip home!"), then being ticketed for speeding. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 05:04:26 @fgbjr I somehow don't miss any of that... 😁 |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 09:16:59 @tsturm We used to have ads like that. The GOP killed passenger rail with subsidies for highways and airlines because they didn't like paying union wages to railroad workers. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 14:12:12 @AlgoCompSynth The US is a case study in cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face. Repeatedly, and against better advice. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 18:44:39 @tsturm The GOP has spent every waking moment since FDR died trying to roll back every social program he and Democratic Congresses put in place. They've won enough elections simply saying labor union wages and taxes kill jobs to undo as much of the New Deal as they could. LBJ won by such a huge margin in 1964 that he was able to get civil rights legislation and Medicare/Medicaid done. But nobody's ever undone Taft-Hartley. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 15:52:17 @tsturm Oh, how I wish we had a functioning high-speed rail system worthy of such a segment in the United States. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 16:27:55 @tsturm I don't suppose you have a link to a streaming version? I'd love to watch this even if I didn't understand a word. Trains are awesome. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 18:08:24 @BarbChamberlain Not sure if the Saturday morning news program on NHK is available for streaming. This was a segment in the 8-9am hour on Saturday 7/27. |
Föderation EN Sa 27.07.2024 20:36:03 @tsturm this journalist knows what to do when she sees a cool train |
Föderation EN So 28.07.2024 10:57:42 @tsturm Have you seen this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTPIs370dPM |
Föderation EN So 28.07.2024 12:42:37 @spinni81 Thanks for reminding me - I’d seen it go by but didn’t watch it yet. 😊 |
