I've learned the reason why I can't follow anymore people is that Mastodon limits the number of people you can follow to 7,500. Okay, I guess? A cursory search indicates this is to prevent spamming, although I haven't quite figured that bit out yet.

Does anyone have some insight into this limit? A quality link would be nice. Thanks!

I have never heard of this limit before, where did you find this out?

Okay, looked into this further. According to one of the lead Masto developers:

(If you're importing followers) "...there's a limit of 7500 followers, or 1.1 times the amount of people following you, whichever is higher."

So, I think the idea is to prevent spammers, trolls etc instantly following a million people or something similarly ridiculous. Guessing it would cause infrastructure problems if there was no limit at all, could be used by vandals etc.

...but if you get more than 7500 followers, then you will be able to follow more people too. (e.g. A person with 10k followers could follow 10k people.)
