I'm tired of people using the term "podcast" when I can't find it at the place where I get my podcasts.

@davew It's only a Podcast if it comes from the RSS region of the internet, otherwise it's just sparkling spotify

Where do you get your podcasts?

@DaveW Also, give me simple and direct links to download the actual audio files. No, only linking to podcast players and their directories does not count.

On a related note, I *love* the podcastindex.org

@davew We should never have accepted the name podcast in the first place

@harry_karadimas @davew While I never listened to Adam Curry's early podcasts on an iPod (I had something else at the time), I appreciate that he was good at branding - and it was those early mp3 players that people did use

@davew if I can't grab the enclosure from an RSS feed it's just another bit of enshitifried marketing. But that game was already being lost with Adam Vindallo's branding play.

@davew Remember downloading podcasts and listening to them later?

Now it is just watching a YouTube video of 2 to 3 people with a Microphone that costs more than the computer it is hooked to,

@davew A podcast *must* have an RSS feed, by definition. To me, if you are on Apple Podcasts but you don't publish your RSS for me to subscribe… bye-bye, I'll search for something else.

@davew So, Dave, I was right there with you and when I saw this I said to myself, “Look! There’s a Spotify logo!”

But I was wrong because this podcast really has downloadable feed URL (.rss) usable in any podcast player.

It’s interesting because many people are podcasting while,
it seems, many corporations are simpl, to put it bluntly, skimming.

@davew I think it is not only the problem, to find the podcast on the main directories, but that a lot of podcast are published using services, so that it is sometimes not even possible to simply follow their local sites RSS feed :(

I am currently trying to make Podcasts also a first class citizen of the Fediverse but it is not as easy as I thought. It seems that quite some sites do not even use local podcasting plugins any more, looking at the number of downloads.

@pfefferle @davew I know Castopods (castopods.com) by @Castopod is trying to make podcasting great again. 😉 Mocking the pumpkin joker aside, I do think there is value in podcasting, although it is surprising that YouTube has become the home of many podcasters nowadays.

@darnell @pfefferle @Castopod I’m not surprised when creators flock to services offering easy tools to adopt and monetize. That’s the engine that drove into the arms of and , and it’s what’s driving into .

@davew, you’ve long advocated for easy writing and distribution of text. Unfortunately, creators don’t care about open standards and access until the lock-in hurts them directly.

here's what i've learned after many years,

1. people will try to steal whatever isn't nailed down.

2. people don't listen to their friends, they *do* listen to their competitors

@pfefferle -- thanks now i have a clue. ;-)

i think the way to go is to start a new platform that supports all of the features of textcasting, does it as part of its stated mission, and then build from there. and let some of the features filter back into this layer of the social web.

at least that's the approach i'm taking. ;-)
