Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 14:07:29 "Smart leftism pays attention to these differences [in flavors of capitalism], because they represent the potential fault lines in capitalism's coalition..." "I'm saying that it's good praxis to understand these divisions in capitalism, because then we can exploit those differences to make real, material gains for human thriving and worker rights. Lumping all for-profit businesses together as identical and irredeemable is bad tactics." "My answer to 'why spend money fixing Bluesky?' is 'why leave 20 million people at risk of enshittification when we could not only make them safe, but also create the toolchain to allow many, many organizations to operate a whole federation of Bluesky servers?' If you care about a better internet β and not just the Fediverse β then you should share this goal, too." @pluralistic politely but firmly calling the purity-testing, gatekeeping leftists (and Fediversians) on the carpet and it's a discussion that is always timely. I am here for it. https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/20/capitalist-unrealism/ #doctorow #enshittification #leftism #progressive #liberal #corporate #socialmedia |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 14:27:39 @guyjantic I politely disagree, but thank you for the summary! @pluralistic |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 14:31:39 @txerren @pluralistic OK, my fault for saying like 5 things at once. Where does the disagreement lie? |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 15:13:28 @txerren @pluralistic Oh, and I should apologize because the quotes I included are not actually a very good summary of the essay. They only represent one slice of what's going on. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 17:57:12 @txerren @pluralistic I've come to politely disagree with me, too, if that's any help. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:58:10 @guyjantic @pluralistic ahahaha it sure does happen to me too XXD |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 21:07:22 @txerren @pluralistic My comment was slappy but seriously, your comment and those of others led me to investigate more, read some important things, and very much change my mind about this. |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 14:34:01 @guyjantic @pluralistic I agree on the position, but question the financial side of things. There is a demand for a lot of money on the table, in comparison to budgets within the Fediverse. I'm not saying that people shouldn't be properly paid in this context, many within the Fediverse aren't, but I hope the community keeps receipts on progress. |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 14:36:31 @koen_hufkens @pluralistic Those seem like good thoughts to me. I have a general kinda-position on all of this (i.e., I favor decentralized systems and active moderation, I don't have a problem with some of those systems being corporate, and and I'm in favor of helpful government regulation of corporate and other entities), but my view of the details shifts around still, probably because I don't know enough. Doctorow's arguments are convincing here, though what you just said also makes sense. So I have things to learn and think about. And tracking/recording progress is something I'm always 100% in favor of. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 17:58:00 @koen_hufkens @pluralistic Thank you for this. The dive into this information has changed my mind, and I now think Doctorow needs to read Lemmer-Webber's analysis. |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 15:24:29 @guyjantic Imagine if instead of going out there stumping about how it's actually necessary to be raising 30 million (MILLION) dollars for what will likely be a shitty, likely temporary 'fire exit' Cory instead used the platform to say, "we should raise 30 million dollars to fund the development and improvement of actually existing decentralized services." I like Cory but he's now had multiple blog posts defending this position and it mostly seems like he is rankled because people rightfully called this out as a boneheaded endorsement. It is so goddamn insulting and wasteful to suggest people donate egregious sums of money to something that really can't be decentralized. I cannot stress enough that if it costs 30 million dollars to set up a second relay, this is not something that will free anyone. I don't know about you but I don't have an excess of 30 MILLION dollars sloshing about to spin up a relay for me and my friends. My friends and I can run a VPS with any activitypub server with what amounts to yearly beer money. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 17:59:36 @jeremiah Thanks for this reply. Your comments and a couple of others led me to dive more deeply into the issue and end up agreeing with you. Doctorow's take seems to be missing some pieces. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:14:35 @guyjantic Thanks for taking this admittedly heated response in good faith. Rereading it myself I'm like "I don't disagree with myself but I must have been pretty annoyed" and then I remembered that part of his blog implicitly calls people who are criticizing the Bluesky efforts dumb. Apologies for any misdirected rage. |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 15:35:46 @guyjantic @pluralistic the problem with that line of thought, despite being totally fine in theory, is that in practice the very architecture of the at protocol is such that only someone with deep, deep pockets will ever be able to build an at service truly independent from bluesky's infrastructure. Edit: @cwebber wrote extensively and very technically about that. |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 16:28:48 @jorgecandeias @pluralistic @cwebber I clearly missed @cwebber's writing; I have enjoyed reading her essays/threads, though I don't always understand the details, not being a coder or true tech person. |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 16:43:29 @guyjantic @jorgecandeias @pluralistic Here's the blogposts if you want them: https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/ |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 16:44:43 @cwebber @jorgecandeias @pluralistic |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:01:31 @cwebber @jorgecandeias @pluralistic After (finally) reading your full analysis... ok, the second one (I followed the first one but not enough), I'm in agreement with the other commenters here, and have updated the post. It doesn't seem feasible for people without "jet wing money" to set up additional bluesky(esque) servers with the current protocol. Thanks for your patience with someone who sometimes takes a while to get around to reading the right things. |
Föderation EN Di 21.01.2025 16:43:30 @guyjantic @pluralistic @cwebber Yeah, same here. That was fascinating to read, even though part of it went way over my head. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:00:07 @jorgecandeias @pluralistic @cwebber And reading her analysis has changed my mind about this. I think Cory Doctorow should read her analysis. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 17:58:26 @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias Thank you but just note I'm not Dr. Lemmer-Webber but my wife @mlemweb is :) |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:02:17 @cwebber @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias @mlemweb Oops! Sorry. Um... just refer to you by your handle? As Christine Lemmer-Webber? |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:02:41 @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias @mlemweb Yup, that's my name :) |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:06:38 @cwebber @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias I mean, since @cwebber has been unofficially dubbed "The Queen of the Fediverse" you could go with "Her Majesty" ... but other than that her name works just fine ;) |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:10:14 @mlemweb @cwebber @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias You should not have said that, there are some barbaric French people in here, and we are known for inventing a machine to cut off the heads of Monarchs. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:10:55 @Sobex @mlemweb @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias Luckily I am not actually the queen of the fediverse |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:11:22 "Luckily I am not actually the queen of the fediverse" -- the Queen of the Fediverse |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:44:11 @cwebber Citation needed. |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 20:09:11 @cwebber youβre a Queen that the French would probably tolerate well π |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:15:37 @Sobex @mlemweb @cwebber @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias that's some calomnious lie! It's a device to carry capital punishment with a minimum of pain |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:17:54 @gkrnours @mlemweb @cwebber @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias Well, that doesn't contradict the fact it works by cutting off heads, and that it was used to behead king, queen and nobles as well as others. It is however a more reliable and less cruel mean of execution than what some people are using nowadays in the so-called United States of America. (Disunited Banana States of Muricah imho) |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:29:01 @mlemweb @cwebber @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias we should get her a sparkly sash so people know |
Föderation EN Mi 22.01.2025 18:31:02 @aeva @cwebber @guyjantic @pluralistic @jeremiah @jorgecandeias I *just* got nerdsniped into a sewing project in the middle of the day yesterday, why do you have to pull me into another one today! (but yes, I probably have the materials and skills on hand to make that happen) |
