Just a few days ago, I lunched my new relay service for the and I'm really happy to see that there're already many ones connected to - more than 50 instances in just a few days!

But what makes me even really happy is to see, that my service [2] also gets linked in the release notes of [1] / - and I can recommend the usage of relay services (it doesn't matter which one!) to everyone. It provides more content from connected instances to you, but also brings your posts - from your local instance - up to other ones within the federated network where it can get much easier distributed around other instances.

is the perfect way to host an own fediverse instance. Using the protocol allows you to connect to all other instances. With the integrated API, you can also use most of your usual clients or web clients. Snac is light, fast, does not require any database and follows the KISS way - which the most of us BSD people are living. With relay services, it's the perfect match for singe-user instances and @grunfink is always open for ideas and to help! It does not always need to be , etc!

And if you're using any other software, you may still benefit by using relay services. And if you're still looking for a guide, howto setup snac2 on , my howto [3] might help you out.

Hello @gyptazy@gyptazy.com ! Thank you for your work! How many resources (CPU, RAM, HDD) does your relay consume?

Föderation EN Sa 25.01.2025 17:28:33

@gyptazy@gyptazy.com @grunfink@comam.es Interesting, in theory I should be connected but don’t see the server in the list…

@gyptazy @grunfink what is a fediverse relay

Föderation DE Sa 25.01.2025 18:35:00

I recently wrote a blog post about the benefits of using a relay instance. You can find it here: gyptazy.com/hosting-a-new-acti - hope it helps :)

Hmm, I subscribed to your relay but don't show up in the list... How can I make sure that I am subscribed?

Let me DM you, I’m currently not at home and can’t watch the logs. Please already check if your timezone is correctly defined.

Regarding validation: If you can find your instance on the overview, then it works.

I've experienced that sometimes my instance does not appear in the relay's top page, but posts keep arriving demonstrating the realy is working fine, so maybe that list in not comprehensive.

Thank you for this service 🙂. I Just recently switched to and it all is still a bit over my head.
Since you know snac (and your own relay obviously), If I may ask:

I now follow your with my relay account and am now getting all the content, but I wonder about the reverse. I see your relay follows my relay now and I wonder: Since my relay doesn't boost anything and doesn't follows anything, will it "magically" still fill your relay service with posts from my instance, or should I enable my relay user to boost everything and let it follow all local accounts?

The documentation doesn't yet mention this step.

Hi, author here. If your instance has a relay user, all your public posts are boosted to all subscribed relays, improving the visibility.

I see, thank you for the confirmation 🙂.
Then the UI checkboxes are not relevant for the special user "relay" I thought so but wanted to be sure.
Thank to you again for this awesome feature. Now I feel snac is giving me everything I had before with someone else's mastodon, only that now, I'm in full selfhost control. 😀

Is it a simple Announce of a Note by a relay user?

@gyptazy What software do you use to run your relay? How much resources does it needs? Thanks a lot!

Föderation · Sa 25.01.2025 22:37:03

Thanks! I just added the relay to may single-user snac instance to try it out. :)

@gyptazy @grunfink I'm curious how it scales with the number of instances.

Föderation DE So 26.01.2025 08:14:48

What do you mean in detail!? How the relay scales? That, luckily, doesn’t have any impacts for instances that use the relay :)

@EpicBear @grunfink

Föderation DE So 26.01.2025 22:09:05

@gyptazy @grunfink Not in detail of course, just broad concepts. I'm just trying to understand how feasible it is for mastodon to have something more approximate to a single image. It's good to hear that the relay doesn't have to much impact on the instances using it. How resource intensive is it to run a relay for hundreds of instances? Roughly speaking.

Föderation DE Mo 27.01.2025 03:48:27

I run a modified (my own fork) of Aode which is written in Rust. Resources are not that huge unlike other solutions written in Py or similar. Also, it depends on the connected instances. Traffic is also to consider. During the day it’s not much but it grows every evening (mostly EU located instances here).
