They're basically like customised mini-timelines. It lets you choose what kind of content you see, instead of seeing everything on one home timeline.

For example, some people like to make lists featuring news sources so that whenever they want to catch up on headlines they go to their "News" list. Others might have a "sport" list, or lists about particular hobbies etc.

It's sort of like having channels on a television or radio 😀

Using lists you can split the people you follow to sub groups... e.g. collecting people that usually write to a specific topic.

With #Mastodon 4.2 (version of the server software used by instances) it should be possible to exclude people on a specific list from your general home timeline.
