@FediTips

I'm new to the fediverse and I'd like to understand better what it means when a server defederates @threads.net. I'd like to follow specific accounts that are currently on threads, without having to deal with all the trash that will come up in the comments from that account. Is this possible? To whitelist specific accounts and block all the rest?

There is no way to allowlist (whitelist) particular accounts as far as I know.

At a server level there are two kinds of blocking: limiting and suspending.

Limiting basically allows people to follow accounts from the limited server, but the limited server's posts and accounts won't show up in searches.

Suspending cuts off all communication with the suspended server, including removing all follows etc. This is known as defederation.

Thanks. So basically limiting is closer to what I was thinking. I could follow an account without risking that the server be filled with thrash from unmoderated accounts?

So if limiting protects the server, why people choose to defederate instead?

@peaoPerdido

Because it still allows people to follow accounts, and Threads allows toxic hate-spreading accounts.

It's not just about preventing people seeing offensive material, it's about preventing the spread of the offensive material in general. There's an example here of why this is the most important thing:

Thanks, I understand better now and agree that defederation is a better option in this case. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about keeping bad actors out. I was thinking about this from the point of view of following a "trusted" account. But, in an unmoderated network, it's hard or impossible to know which accounts are ok and which aren't.
