Has anyone come up with a strategy for load testing a Mastodon instance? Iā€™d love to run some tests around how much traffic my setup can handle *before* it breaks organically.

@philip well, it can't be done by request unless you know some "bigger" accounts.

Basically just by having a bigger account boost your post, it can stress the instance.

I can attempt to help by boosting this but I am still small compared to some others here.

Maybe some in my follow circle can help as well, to see if we can bring your instance to it's knees?šŸ˜…

@BeAware @philip

Subscribing to the Flipboard relay with 4 CPU cores and 6 GB RAM, even with jvm memory set at 1gb, on the same server as my Mastodon instance, brought my ElasticSearch down at around 1pm every other day and crashed Redis also. It's a busy relay. But, that's on me for not having enough resources. (I think this is my last edit. lol)

@paul @philip there's a relay? šŸ¤”

I had used a relay that brings their posts to my instance, which causes the same thing, but it's not official, it's relay.fedi.buzz šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

@philip The issue is we have a AP server it seems to crash when to many public delete request come in (trying to work out how to stop that from crashing everything)

@torspedia @philip Probably the simplest way is to subscribe to a bunch of federation relays but not sure if that will give any information to when it breaks organically.

Besides that, it's really hard to replicate server load because it may work fine one day with a number of users/followers/following and then it may slow down or stop working the next. Nothing changed internally, just some mass load from external instances causing the extra federation.
