Speak for yourself pal, I need my negs so that I can throw them in a big box with all the others and never, ever get around to sorting them out. As it should be.

@moragperkins I always get mine back for archival. Digital files could get lost or corrupted, or maybe I'll want a better scan in the future!

@Gargron oh absolutely!

...and some day I will properly organise that archive. Maybe.

@moragperkins my local lab give me funny looks when I don't ask for scans or prints when I get colour developed.
I *only* want the negs!

Morag Perkins

Morag Perkins (@moragperkins@mastodon.art)

Föderation EN Fr 07.06.2024 17:01:03

@tmcfarlane OK that is hardcore! Scanning is a colossal pain in the arse, I admire people who are willing to do it themselves.

@moragperkins I scan my home developed stuff anyway. And while colour scanning is an extra level of pain, I've said before, I'd rather mess it all up myself than let the lab do it for me :D

Morag Perkins

Morag Perkins (@moragperkins@mastodon.art)

Föderation EN Fr 07.06.2024 17:10:16

@tmcfarlane lol

I let the lab do it for me and only personally mess up selected really special frames that need extra messing!

I also get processing only because the lab (singular, only one in my city) scans at lower res than I can do myself.

@moragperkins @35millimetre yeah I was doing some estate planning and wondering to myself, will my sister wanna deal with all these negatives? Unless I become a famous photographer after my death it won’t matter much and just be a hassle to her of one more thing to deal with that I also never touch after I archive them πŸ˜‚

@moragperkins who just doesn’t take their negatives with them when they get the prints….? So odd. I learned a long time ago that negs are priceless. Just takes one studio flood! Also, there are countless ways to print any given negative, and over the years I’ve gone back and reprinted a few very differently!

Föderation EN Fr 07.06.2024 22:02:32

@klizana @moragperkins I always warn people about places like Walmart that discard the negs and only return low-resolution scans. That's like keeping JPGs and deleting all your RAW files.

The scans are generally decent, but if you want to get high-res versions for printing, you're out of luck.

tomnorthfilm

tomnorthfilm (@tomnorthfilm@photog.social)

Föderation EN Fr 07.06.2024 23:19:40

@analogfusion @klizana @moragperkins And the scans are probably jpegs which means you’ll be severely limited in how much you can work with them. Forget about color grading.

Lance

Föderation EN Fr 07.06.2024 23:30:00

@tomnorthfilm @klizana @moragperkins Absolutely. It might be semi-acceptable if they provided good quality TIFFs you could edit later. Then again, most non-photographers wouldn't know what to do with them. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

@moragperkins @klizana UK Film Lab (niw Canadian Film Lab) has operated on that principle for a decade or more. They hold your negatives for up to a year, then you can choose to get them back in batch at cost, or destroyed. I see Filmdev, my fave lab for C41 dev/scan, now offers free neg disposal or paid neg return.

I get mine back.

@moragperkins When I send out my film to a lab to get dev'ed Ive always had my them returned, even ones Ive done myself Ive kept (though when I first started there was some shots I cut off & threw out 🫣). I do plan to digitize all the shots I've done eventually, I got alooot of 35mm (86 pages,~2700 shots) & just started with 6x9 (6 pages so far ~41 shots).

There have been a couple labs Ive seen where they said "you have to tell us to return your negatives, we dont automatically return them" πŸ™„
